Enzymes
An enzyme is a protein produced by the body that is essential for cellular biochemical activity. Enzymes have been used since ancient times in fermentation processes such as the production of wine and bread.
They have been appearing in our cosmetics for several years, particularly enzymes from fruits such as pineapple, fig or papaya.
Once on the skin, fruit enzymes used in cosmetics have proteolytic activity, that is, they are capable of dissolving keratin proteins, which serve as cement between dead cells present on the surface of the skin.
Thus separated from each other, dead cells are more easily eliminated and desquamation is accelerated. The skin is exfoliated and the creation of young cells is stimulated. The advantage of enzymatic scrubbing is that their action is selective and acts specifically on the superficial layer of the skin, which allows for gentle exfoliation . In addition, they need to be formulated in products whose pH is close to that of the skin (therefore non-acidifying).
